L01 David Hockney

David Hockney

Genre: David Hockney is a cubist genre photographer.

Purpose: The purpose of Hockney's work is to be creative and unique in comparison to other photographs, from say other photographers as this is what cubism offers, as the images are in general edited in a different, more unique way. The purpose is of course as well to show a reflection of Hockney's creativity in his work/photography, as this is art/photography is a reflection of the person, of course

Image Analysis: After analyzing some of hockey's images, I can again infer that they are very unique, as for example, in the first example image, I placed below, you can see that, the image is a typical city which appears to have been sliced up into small cubes, to give it that unique, cubist effect.

This cubist effect was most likely done on the program, Adobe Photoshop. I can also infer that the image  stands out to other photographers, photographs. The image also has elements of futurism as it looks almost as if it has a futuristic, glitch effect.

For the second image in which I analysed, I can infer that it appears to have a very vivid set of colors and it is arranged with a grid of squares, which is again a cubist effect. The colors also show that the image has elements of futurism, as the purple for example gives it that surreal look.

Meaning
The meaning of this photography is of course to reflect how the artist sees the world, as art/photography is of course connected to the actual photographer/artist and their perspective on the world.

David Hockney is a worldwide famous photographer who was born on the 9th July 1937 in Bradford. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century and one of the most renowned photographers in the cubism genre. He was a major contributor to the pop art movement that took part during the 1960’s.  He was most renowned for his work on cubism in which he referred to as “the joiners”

For example, in this piece of Hockney’s art,the purpose of  cubism in this image is to give the photo a very unique and creative effect. Cubism is where a photo is made up of objects, for example geometric shapes.

Hockney here has decided to create his image out of small squares, which almost gives it a pix-elated effect almost.

Hockney has also done bits in the fashion sector as for example, he has designed sets and costumes for ballets and operas.

Hockney’s work shows aspects of surrealism, as for example, in this image of the Grand Canyon, the colours are very vibrant and surreal, as it shows shades of purple for example in the corner which really enhances the painting as opposed to it just being a normal painting of the grand canyon.

Overall I really like Hockney’s work as it is very unique in comparison with other artists/photographers, and I like the fact that he uses a lot of photographic techniques and features which really help to give his work that unique and creative look.
